Potty Training a Puppy: a step-by-step guide
Potty training puppy with Absolute Angel Dog Training in Lynchburg Virginia
Potty training is one of the first big challenges of puppy ownership, and one of the most rewarding when it clicks. I'm Laura, a professional dog trainer based in Lynchburg, VA, and I've helped hundreds of puppy owners get through this stage with their sanity (and their carpets) intact. Here's exactly how I recommend approaching it.
Step 1: Set Up for Success Before You Even Start
The biggest mistake I see is giving puppies too much freedom too soon. Until your puppy has had three to four solid weeks without a single indoor accident, free-roaming the house is a privilege they haven't quite earned yet. Use a crate, exercise pen, or baby-gated area to keep them in a space you can easily supervise.
Your crate should be just big enough for your puppy to stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably, no bigger. Puppies naturally avoid going to the bathroom where they sleep, so a properly sized crate helps them develop the bladder control to hold it until they get outside. Most wire crates include a divider so you can adjust the size as your puppy grows.
Step 2: Keep a Consistent Schedule
Consistency is everything in potty training. Take your puppy outside at the same times every day:
• First thing in the morning and after naps
• After every meal
• After drinking water
• After play sessions
• Before bedtime
• Every 1–2 hours while awake (especially for puppies 8–12 weeks old)
I also recommend keeping a simple potty log. Jot down when your pup went out, whether they eliminated, and when they came back in. It sounds like a lot, but you'll start seeing patterns quickly and it takes the guesswork out of timing.
Step 3: Leash ‘Em Up!

When it's time to go out, keep your puppy on a leash. I know it seems like a pain, but puppies are natural explorers. Without a leash, they'll wander and sniff for 15 minutes, come inside, and go potty immediately because now things are boring and hey, why not. The leash keeps them focused.
Take them to the same spot outside every time. The familiar scent tells their nose it's potty time, and they'll get down to business faster.
Step 4: Reward Like You Mean It
The moment (and I mean the very moment) your puppy eliminates outside, give them something truly delicious and celebrate like they just won the lottery. Enthusiastic praise plus high-value treats right after they go reinforces the behavior powerfully. Then let them enjoy some off-leash playtime outside as an added bonus.
Important: don't give the treats when they come back inside. That accidentally teaches them that coming indoors is the reward so they'll hold it outside to rush back in for the treat. Keep the reward right there in the yard, right after they go.
Step 5: Handle Accidents Without Drama
Accidents happen, that's just puppy life. When they do, clean the area thoroughly with an enzymatic cleaner (regular cleaners leave odors that invite repeat visits to the same spot). Never scold your puppy for an accident you didn't catch in the act. They won't connect the scolding to the accident, and it will only make them anxious. Just clean it up, consider what cue you might have missed, and adjust your routine.
One More Thing: Skip the Puppy Pads
Puppy pads seem like a helpful shortcut, but they teach your dog that eliminating inside is okay and undoing that lesson takes real time and effort. Start from the beginning with the clear message: outside is the right place to go.
